Croome Park, Worcestershire: A Robert Adam park building

This is one of our favourite National Trust Estates where we have worked on numerous buildings including The Temple Greenhouse, Park Seat and The Ice House.

We have built up good relations with the successive Park Managers and as the landscape park has developed and matured, we have adjusted our working methods to suit the increasing visitor numbers and permanent pathways that The Trust have installed.

To take the Park Seat as a recent example, the works were due to proceed in the summer but because of bat access and funding constraints, The Trust required the works to proceed in the winter. We assessed the difficulties posed by winter working and advised that this was possible, but that The Trust could run a risk of accelerating and uncontrolled costs if due consideration was not given at planning stage to the needs of scaffold lorries and other works vehicles that were required to cross a mile of field to get to the Park Seat.

We surveyed the track and designed temporary roadways for all those areas that we saw capable of becoming boggy and muddy during the winter and we converted a Landrover to act as a scaffold carrier. In consequence the works proceeded smoothly over the winter and The Trust had control of its budget.
